Things To Do
Fourth of July Sunday, July 3-Monday, July 4

America’s birthday, a celebration of freedom, liberty and patriotism. Celebrations around the United States honoring the country include grilling out, swimming, going to parades, admiring awesome fireworks and being together with family and friends.

Communities in northwest Illinois come together to celebrate the birthday of our nation with special traditions and annual events.

Drawing crowds from all around, the Fourth of July festivities in each town are filled with fun for the whole family.

Spend your Fourth of July with a fun-filled day at Galena’s Recreation Park, where the Galena ARC will host its third annual Fourth of July Community Celebration. The event will have a kid’s area housed with bounce houses, games and face painting, along with activities for the entire family, including mud volleyball, slam dunk contest, home run derby, dunk tank, euchre tournament, live music and much more.

Galena Kiwanis Club kicks off their afternoon and evening celebration with live music at 2 pm at the Green Street Plaza.

The annual community parade begins at 6 pm, featuring local businesses, floats, bands and marchers. Following the parade, enjoy the live entertainment provided by Dr. Mark and the Sutures, with food provided by the GOATS cycling club from 4 to 9:30 pm. The fireworks will launch from Grant Park at dusk.

Just 28 miles east of Galena’s celebration, Stockton will have an annual celebration of their own, held in the Stockton Township Park.

The festivities begin early with food and craft vendors lining the park for visitors to enjoy.

Stockton’s annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament also begins early with games at both the middle and high school. Across the road and in the park, a Little League baseball tournament will provide additional entertainment for onlookers in the park.

With live music, a car show, a bingo tent, a beer tent and famous barbecue chicken meal, the Stockton Fourth of July Celebration in the park is a great way to celebrate the patriotic holiday. And of course, the big fireworks show caps off the evening.

Hanover, just 17 miles from Galena, allows visitors to start celebrating America’s birthday early on July 3.

Enjoying the Independence Day celebrations on July 3, Hanover residents go all out during the day-long event.

Kicking off the event, the VFW will host the annual American Legion beef roast, beginning at 4:30 pm.

The Hanover parade will begin promptly at 6 pm, with a canoe race getting underway at 7:30 pm.

Live music will keep the festivities going until the fireworks begin.

In case of rain delay, Galena and Stockton have scheduled July 5 as their celebration day.
