The river has a variety of fish. The river is one of several in the state where the Illinois Department of Natural Resources releases keeper-size trout.
Trout require clean, clear, cold water, and in the spring, Apple River meets these requirements.
The fish do not survive through the summer months so the stream is stocked on a put-and-take basis. This historical hand-drawn map represents a portion of the Mississippi River water system bordering Jo Daviess County as well as the wildlife in the river system.
